The Intercultural and International Communication (IC) program's dual focus on culture and communication examines the geopolitical, technological, economic, and cultural relations among peoples, societies, nations, and communities. First established in 1968, IC is the first program of its kind and remains a leader and innovator in the field.

Summary. The intellectual impetus for international communication research has come from a variety of disciplines, notably political science, sociology, psychology, social psychology, linguistics, anthropology, and, of course, communication science and international relations.

International communication includes different communication forms and communication patterns. It can be defined in two complementary ways: narrow and broad. Narrow refers to media like newspapers, radio, TV, films and the Internet, while broad refers to interpersonal, organisational and mass communication.

International communications is an extremely broad, interdisciplinary topic. To master communications, experts must have at least some knowledge of engineering, computer science, politics, economics, sociology, anthropology, business, law, and public policy plus in-depth expertise on two or three of these topics.

Notes on contributors. Hamid Mowlana is Professor Emeritus of International Relations at the School of International Service, American University (AU), Washington D. C. (USA). He was the founding director of the Intercultural and International Communication Program at AU and served as its director for 37 years from 1968 to 2005.
