IsaMill Technology was first developed at Mt Isa in the mid 1990's when a major research program was undertaken by MIM as it was then known (now Xstrata) to enable fine grained ore bodies to be economically developed. The first installation of the technology was at the Hilton Concentrator in 1992.

Xstrata Technology will provide three M3000 IsaMills in the regrind circuit of the new concentrator. Each mill will be powered by 1,500-kW (2,000-hp) motors and will use ceramic media. The new concentrator will be designed to treat 140,000 mt/d of ore in a two-line operation and will initially produce 400,000 mt/y of copper in concentrates.
